Why Fit Matters
Starting bib shorts can be a bit daunting. We wrote this guide on sizing and how to wear cycling bib shorts so you can get comfy on your rides in no time.
Most cyclists know that cycling bibs are the best way to ensure comfort on the saddle. But without the right fit, you aren't getting the full bibs experience. When you wear the right fit, a quality cycling bib will move with your body and protects your sit bones.
Find Your Perfect Fit
Our Size Calculator uses your height, weight, waist size, and chest measurements to recommend the ideal bib size for maximum comfort on your rides. Leave blank if you're unsure, our calculator works with whatever information you provide.
1. Ditch the Underwear
This one is a non-negotiable: no underwear under your bibs. Seriously, none.
- Why? The chamois (the padded part) is engineered to reduce friction, wick sweat, and provide cushioning. That doesn't work with an extra layer in the way!
- Avoid the Ouch: Adding underwear introduces an unnecessary layer of fabric that can cause discomfort and saddle sores.
2. Go For a Snug Fit
Bibs should fit snugly on your body, kind of like a second skin.
If you're between sizes, we recommend sizing down because a looser fit causes irritation (loose fabric will shift around during a ride). With Civilized Bibs, you'll always look great when you're riding around because the outer shorts will cover up the skin-tight nature of the inside bibs.
- Chamois Placement: The padding is designed to sit right under your sit bones. If it feels off, adjust the bibs before you start riding.
- Strap Comfort: The straps should lie flat and feel supportive without digging into your shoulders. They're there to keep everything in place.
3. Pair a Top With Your Bib
We recommend cycling jerseys because they don't flap around in the wind, allowing you to cut through wind. But if you're just starting off, a t-shirt will be totally fine as you start building your cycling habit.
- Additional Storage: Cycling jerseys come with additional pockets in the back if you need to carry extra items.
- Proper Sizing: If you opt for a t-shirt, try not to wear one too large for your body (wind will cause the shirt to flap around a lot of it's too big for your body).
4. Wash and Care Instructions
Bib shorts are an investment, and taking care of them ensures they last:
- Wash After Every Ride: Use a gentle detergent and a cold cycle to preserve the fabric and chamois.
- Air Dry Only: Heat can damage the materials, so skip the dryer. Hang them up and let them dry naturally.
